5th Street Revitalization Project

5th Street Improvements — Public Notice: January 9, 2026
The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD), in coordination with the City of Gretna, announces upcoming lane closures and detours for the 5th Street Improvements Project.
Lane Closures
Please Note: All dates and durations listed for lane closures and construction
phases are approximate and subject to change based on weather conditions,
unforeseen circumstances, and project progress. Updates will be provided as
soon as possible through official channels.
5th Street will be closed from Richard Street to Franklin Avenue in 3 phases:
• Phase 1 — Waterline Installation: Westbound (River side)
Closed Jan 19, 2026 – April 2026
• Phase 2 — East Bound Lane Road Work: Eastbound (Expressway side)
Closed April 2026 – October 2026
• Phase 3 — West Bound Lane Road Work: Westbound (River side)
Closed October 2026 – March 2027
Detour Routes
Detour routes will be posted by the contractor. Willow Drive at 5th Street will
remain open for neighborhood and local traffic only.
Business Access
The contractor will be responsible for maintaining access to businesses on 5th
Street.
June 2025 Project Updates:
Private utilities are in the process of relocation. DOTD has bid out the roadwork, and contractor LA Contracting is waiting on utilities to complete their work before road construction can begin. Please CLICK HERE for the June 23, 2025 community meeting presentation details.

Anticipated advertisement for bids is August, 2024 – with construction expected to begin later this fall.
